Bejrut
Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, lies in the centre of the country on the Mediterranean Sea. It has more than 2 million inhabitants, mostly of Arab origin. The city's history reaches back 5000 years, as confirmed by Phoenician, Roman and Ottoman excavations. Beirut is a cultural and economic centre, home to the government and to major companies. After the destruction of the war, intensive restoration work is under way, bringing back the shine of the city centre and the tourist districts. The ideal time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant.
